EMILY

I heard part of the argument between Cassian and the other two. I wanted to say something, to defend him and tell Morgan to shut up, but I couldn't get myself to move. I could feel the frustration roll off Cassian when he sat next to me, and still I couldn't say anything. I just leaned against him, which seemed to help slightly. He relaxed a little at the contact, and I drifted off again.

I gathered that Griffin and Cassian had a history. Cassian hadn't spoken about it much, but it clearly didn't end well. Morgan reminded me of a guard dog, quick to jump to Griffin's defense as if he couldn't defend himself. I don't think she realized that when Griffin stated that he didn't want a mate, that included her. His statement had stung, but he was right about one thing: I didn't know him and I wasn't sure if I wanted to. Things would be much easier if I didn't have to worry about some stupid bond with him as well. I could be happy with Cassian; I'd liked him long before the bond and I was sure we would be good together. While the thought was running through my mind, I couldn't shake the small voice that wanted to know more about Griffin, that was slightly attracted to his "don't care" attitude and the promise of danger and excitement.

About halfway into the drive, I couldn't pretend to sleep anymore. The bus was quiet, and when I lifted my head to look around, Cassian smiled. He looked like my movement had pulled him from a deep corner of his mind. He blinked the glaze of thought away and tucked a piece of hair that had escaped from my ponytail behind my ear.

"Have you slept at all?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I tried but sleep evades me. How are you feeling?"

"I'd like to say rested or better, but I'm tired. Last night really rattled me and I'm grateful that you found me. I kept thinking what would have happened if you were 20 minutes later."

Cassian placed his hand over mine, stopping the shaking. "But we weren't. I'm sorry that you had to go through that and I shouldn't have left you alone. I should have come to look for you sooner. I heard your voice, your message as we left the pub."

I took a deep breath. There were things that he needed to know, things that I couldn't make sense of. "I went through the wrong door on my way to the bathroom. It was the emergency exit, and when I fell, the door slammed shut and I couldn't get back inside. It was cold and slippery and I was drunk. I thought I'd forget but I remember everything. I thought the guys were you and Griffin. I couldn't see their faces in the dark, so I called out but they didn't answer. One of them laughed and I knew it wasn't you. I started to panic.
